What is the AFA?
People often assume that any franchisor can become a member of the Approved Franchise Association, as long as they pay the membership fees. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth!
In this week’s blog, we thought it would be a good idea to explain exactly what’s involved in becoming a member of the AFA. How do we ensure that every member of the AFA meets our criteria and can demonstrate their ongoing commitment to our values?
The AFA was set up in 2012 to support the rapidly growing franchising sector. By offering accreditation and membership to every type of franchise business, large and small, we aim to encourage the further growth of the sector and ensure the standard of UK franchising remains of a consistently high quality. We provide an affordable opportunity for franchise businesses to prove they’re doing things the right way, as well as reassurance to potential franchisees that their chosen franchise is a viable and sustainable business opportunity.
All of the above would be meaningless, if we didn’t carefully assess your application to make sure your franchise business stands up to scrutiny. However, the AFA’s vetting and approval process is extremely concise and we certainly don’t automatically approve every franchisor that expresses an interest in becoming a member.
Our review of your business is carried out by independent legal firms. It involves us not only speaking to you, but your franchisees and clients, which results in us gaining a complete picture of your business, enabling us to reach an informed decision. We also analyse your marketing materials, training and operational processes to confirm that you have the appropriate structure in place to support your franchisees.
In the event of an application being declined, we will provide valuable, constructive feedback, in order to help the applicant make the necessary improvements.
In this way, we ensure that the AFA Seal of Approval is, and always will be, an accreditation that members can justifiably be proud of.
