This week, our spotlight blog is about an AFA member called Mess Around, which organises sessions and parties across the UK that provide children with the opportunity to get messy and explore new, sensory activities. With lots of activities to explore, including their famous, painting wall, little ones can squelch, pour, mix and get messy to their hearts’ content.
Investment: £5,999 inc VAT
Sector: Children’s Entertainment
What is Mess Around?
Mess Around is ideal for children aged over six months old, but older siblings up to the age of ten can also get involved in the Big Kids Create & Make Corner, where they have arts, crafts or junk modelling available to keep them busy.
Mess Around is owned by Kristine Monaghan, a mother of two girls who knows the challenges of running a business while raising children. She started her Mess Around journey in 2011 when she took her own daughter to a Mess Around session. She instantly loved the concept of how children aged six months to five years could go along and play in a relaxed environment, with no pressure to do anything other than what made them happy.
When an opportunity arose to run her own Mess Around franchise, Kristine jumped at the chance. She then relocated to the Isle of Skye and transferred her franchise to the new area. With over one hundred children attending her sessions from across the Island, the sessions were a huge hit and, not long after that, Kristine had the opportunity to buy the Mess Around business. She has since enjoyed many years welcoming new franchisees to regions in England, Scotland and Wales and bringing messy fun to thousands of children across the country.
It’s a particularly exciting time to be joining the Mess Around team right now, as the business has recently launched two new programmes to its family. Messberaver is their new, glow-in-the-dark, neon party, which caters to both children and adults, and Slime Lab UK is aimed at primary and secondary age children. These new programmes provide the opportunity to attract a new target audience, earn additional revenue and provide a truly unique experience.
What does the franchise package include?
When you join the Mess Around team, you really do become a part of their family. With a fantastic franchise package, offering equipment worth over £2,000, marketing support and full training and mentoring, they will even co-host your launch event to help you get off to a flying start. To top it off, you will be part of an amazing team who are all passionate about Mess Around and share their ambition to be the largest, messy play provider in the UK.
How much can you earn?
With no commission to pay and no targets to meet, on average, a franchisee can turn over between £250-£350 per session. You could reasonably generate £600-£700 by delivering two sessions per day. There are also opportunities to earn additional income from private sessions, parties, workshops and merchandise. Mess Around states that you can expect your initial investment to be earned back within your first six months of trading.
There is a monthly licence fee of £150 and Mess Around will even give you your first two months FREE OF CHARGE to help you get established.
